Emily St John Mandel's 2014 breakout novel, Station Eleven, recounted the tale of a worldwide pandemic that begins in the previous Soviet Union and demolishes life on Earth. An exciting read with a scary, elegiac quality, it won the Arthur C Clarke grant and was broadly lauded for its fine narrating and for the disrupting glimpses it gave of our reality conceivably unwinding into bedlam and the tragic presence past it. Five years after it emerged, and with a HBO variation ready to go, it obtained an atmosphere of unpleasant prediction as Covid-19 made us generally conversant in the language of pandemics. What made the book's clear foreknowledge doubly unusual is that one of Mandel's trademarks as an essayist is seeing the reverberations between evidently chance occasions: the connections between far off characters, themes from craftsmanship repeating throughout everyday life, and the verifiable reverberations of long-isolated episodes. The fortuitous event of a book genuinely expecting an ongoing quandary could be one of her novelistic gadgets.
